The "Father of Gynecology" Built the Practice Off of Enslaved People's Backs
June 19, 1865, also known as Juneteenth, is recognized as the emancipation of enslaved people although freedom has been granted hundreds on year prior. As we celebrate true freedom, it is important to shed light on how J. Marion Sims is recognized as the "Father of Gynecology" when really, his success was built on experimenting and sexually harassing our enslaved ancestors.
You read right...there are multiple resources that showcases the facts of what enslaved women went through while from hysterectomies without anesthesia to being forced to have children from ages 15-40 at least once a year. Once of our favorite resources regarding this subject is Medical Apartheid: The Dark History of Medical Experimentation on Black Americans from Colonial Times to Present by Harriet A. Washington. Thoroughly reading this information was heartbreaking, enraging, frustrating amongst other emotions however I could only imagine the fear and pain that each one of these women experienced during this doctor visits. We would like to take time and pay homage to these enslaved individuals for what they endured.
